SEARCHING FOR AN ANGEL

Longtime Akron/Alden resident Diane Krzyzanowski (46) and her cousins Tammy (40) and Gary (48) are all suffering from kidney disease. Their kidneys have failed and they are receiving dialysis treatments to stay alive. They are on the national waiting list for a kidney transplant. So far 25 friends, relatives, and co-workers have selflessly offered to donate one of their kidneys! Unfortunately, none of them were compatible because of blood type or health problems. So Diane, Tammy, and Gary continue to wait along with two dear friends whose fathers are also in need of a kidney transplant. The wait is expected to be years and years. It is very difficult to remain healthy after years of dialysis. Many people die while waiting. We are reaching out to the community in hopes that someone may consider giving the gift of life.

Diane continues to work despite her illness. She is a much-loved nurse who has dedicated her career to providing comfort and care to people in need. Her sweet and gentle manner has eased the pain of many people in Western New York. She cared for her mother during her decade-long struggle with kidney failure.

Tammy continues to raise 4 young children despite uncomfortable and sometimes painful dialysis treatments 3 times per week, 4 hours each treatment. Diane, Tammy, and Gary all watched as their mother and aunt battled kidney disease. Back then there were fewer options for transplantation, and both moms died from kidney failure. Today, living donors are saving lives.

Many people do not know that they can live a completely full and healthy life with only one kidney. Actually we only need ½ of a healthy functioning kidney to live a normal life!

If you are an O blood type, and are interested in learning more about organ donation, please call Transplant Coordinators Karen or Haley at Buffalo General Hospital’s Transplant Center at 859-1345 or 859-2354. You can also call Diane at 542-4892 or email her at dlk2629@hotmail.com
